Pretty Things

"Only pink, hearts and flowers are pretty."
-Imogen, 3, today, with a dead-on description of her current style

She asked this afternoon
if we could change
the Strait of Juan de Fuca
from blue
to pink with hearts and flowers,
so it can be beautiful.

Her "Maiden" Name

Wikipedia now has an entry on the name "Imogen," saying it's circuitously derived from "maiden." I wrote about this a year ago.

The Truth of Who You Are

Feeling will get you closer to the truth of who you are than thinking.

Breast-feeding Protected

Sunday is an important day for families in Washington when a law protecting the rights of mothers to breast-feed in public goes into effect. Better late than never, seattlepi.com reports that "[m]ore than 40 other states" have already implemented similar laws.

Happy Birthday Uncle Al

Imogen took charge of wrapping Uncle Al's birthday present last weekend. She chose snowman paper and a daisy bow, even cutting a "skylight" in the top of the gift wrap. Plus, Immy independently designed and made the two handmade cards taped to the front (I wrote "AL" on a scrap for her to copy, and she cleverly used it to wrap that card with).

How to be Idle and Blessed

Imogen, Today

From "The Summer Day"

I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Girl's School

Immy set up a school all by herself.

Imogen made me a salad this morning. She is forever serving up amazing dishes. I love that about her.

One Meaning of Love

Imogen and I exchanged "I love yous" a couple days ago. Afterward I asked "what does 'love' mean?" She answered "for making new friends."

Giacomo 2004-2009

Our beloved bunny Giacomo is gone. He was a fun rabbit with loads of personality, who came inside our house, let Imogen push him around in a stroller and provided us more entertainment than we ever expected from a little bunny I rescued with his mom Poppy more than four years ago. He was born on Christmas Day in 2004, I rescued him Memorial Day weekend 2005 and he didn't survive a night on the loose July 10. We'll miss you Jackie! We loved you.
